16:3 – Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established. [compare 24:27 – Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house.]

16:4 – The LORD hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil. [cf. Is. 45:5-7 – I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me: That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the LORD, and there is none else. I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things. Job 42:11 – Then came there unto him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had been of his acquaintance before, and did eat bread with him in his house: and they bemoaned him, and comforted him over all the evil that the LORD had brought upon him: every man also gave him a piece of money, and every one an earring of gold. II Kings 17:19-20 – Also Judah kept not the commandments of the LORD their God, but walked in the statutes of Israel which they made. And the LORD rejected all the seed of Israel, and afflicted them, and delivered them into the hand of spoilers, until he had cast them out of his sight. Lam. 1:5 – Her adversaries are the chief, her enemies prosper; for the LORD hath afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions: her children are gone into captivity before the enemy. Ps. 119:75 – I know, O LORD, that thy judgments are right, and that thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me. Is. 30:20-21 – And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity, and the water of affliction, yet shall not thy teachers be removed into a corner any more, but thine eyes shall see thy teachers: And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left. Ps. 119:71 – It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes. Jer. 31:28 – And it shall come to pass, that like as I have watched over them, to pluck up, and to break down, and to throw down, and to destroy, and to afflict; so will I watch over them, to build, and to plant, saith the LORD. Mic. 4:1,5-7 – But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it. ... For all people will walk every one in the name of his god, and we will walk in the name of the LORD our God for ever and ever. In that day, saith the LORD, will I assemble her that halteth, and I will gather her that is driven out, and her that I have afflicted; And I will make her that halted a remnant, and her that was cast far off a strong nation: and the LORD shall reign over them in mount Zion from henceforth, even for ever. Nah. 1:12 – Thus saith the LORD; Though they be quiet, and likewise many, yet thus shall they be cut down, when he shall pass through. Though I have afflicted thee, I will afflict thee no more. Ps. 34:18-19 – The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.]

16:6 – By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil. [cf. 3:7 – Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. 14:16 – A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is confident. Job 28:28 – And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.]

16:7 – When a man's ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him. [cf. Matt. 5:9 – Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.]

16:10 – A divine sentence is in the lips of the king: his mouth transgresseth not in judgment. [cf. II Sam. 23:3 – The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God.]

16:10 – A divine sentence is in the lips of the king: his mouth transgresseth not in judgment. [cf. Rom. 13:1-5 – Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.]

16:12 – It is an abomination to kings to commit wickedness: for the throne is established by righteousness. [cf. II Sam. 23:3 – The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God.]

16:20 – He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the LORD, happy is he. [cf. Ps. 40:4 – Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies. Ps. 84:12 – O LORD of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee. Ps. 32:10 – Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: but he that trusteth in the LORD, mercy shall compass him about. Ps. 34:8 – O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. Ps. 34:22 – The LORD redeemeth the soul of his servants: and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate. Ps. 37:3 – Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. Ps. 37:5-6 – Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday. Ps. 118:8-9 – It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes. Ps. 20:7 – Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God. Prov. 3:5-8 – Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.]

16:21 – The wise in heart shall be called prudent: and the sweetness of the lips increaseth learning. [compare Ps. 19:7-10 – The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.]

16:22 – Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that hath it: but the instruction of fools is folly. [CONTRAST II Tim. 3:16-17 – All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.]

16:24 – Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

16:24 – Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones. [cf. 12:18 – There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health. Ps. 107:20 – He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions. Matt. 8:8 – The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. Luke 7:7 – Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed.]

16:25 – There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. [cf. v. 9 – A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps. v. 2 – All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits.]

16:27 – An ungodly man diggeth up evil: and in his lips there is as a burning fire. [compare Jer. 23:29 – Is not my word like as a fire? saith the LORD; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces? Jer. 5:14 – Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them. Jer. 20:9 – Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in mine heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not stay.]

16:29 – A violent man enticeth his neighbour, and leadeth him into the way that is not good. [cf. Prov. 1:10-19 – My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not. If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause: Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit: We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil: Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse: My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path: For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood. Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird. And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives. So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof. Ps. 26:9 – Gather not my soul with sinners, nor my life with bloody men; Is. 33:15-16 – He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil; He shall dwell on high: his place of defence shall be the munitions of rocks: bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure.]

16:32 – He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city. [cf. James 1:19-20 – Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.]

17:11 – An evil man seeketh only rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him. [cf. Jer. 28:16 – Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will cast thee from off the face of the earth: this year thou shalt die, because thou hast taught rebellion against the LORD. Jer. 29:32 – Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite, and his seed: he shall not have a man to dwell among this people; neither shall he behold the good that I will do for my people, saith the LORD; because he hath taught rebellion against the LORD. I Sam. 15:23 -- For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.]

17:18 – A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend. [cf. 11:15 – He that is surety for a stranger shall smart for it: and he that hateth suretiship is sure. 20:16 – Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman. 27:13 – Take his garment that is surety for a stranger, and take a pledge of him for a strange woman. 6:1-5 – My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger, Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth. Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend. Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids. Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.]

17:26 – Also to punish the just is not good, nor to strike princes for equity. [cf. Ezek. 18:24-32 – But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die. Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel; Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal? When a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die. Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive. Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die. Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal? Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin. Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye. Ezek. 33:11-20 – Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel? Therefore, thou son of man, say unto the children of thy people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression: as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall thereby in the day that he turneth from his wickedness; neither shall the righteous be able to live for his righteousness in the day that he sinneth. When I shall say to the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, all his righteousnesses shall not be remembered; but for his iniquity that he hath committed, he shall die for it. Again, when I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; if he turn from his sin, and do that which is lawful and right; If the wicked restore the pledge, give again that he had robbed, walk in the statutes of life, without committing iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die. None of his sins that he hath committed shall be mentioned unto him: he hath done that which is lawful and right; he shall surely live. Yet the children of thy people say, The way of the Lord is not equal: but as for them, their way is not equal. When the righteous turneth from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, he shall even die thereby. But if the wicked turn from his wickedness, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall live thereby. Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. O ye house of Israel, I will judge you every one after his ways.]

17:27 – He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit. [cf. 10:19 – In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise. Ecc. 5:2-3 – Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few. For a dream cometh through the multitude of business; and a fool's voice is known by multitude of words. James 1:19-21 – Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.]

17:27 – He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit. [cf. Dan. 5:12 – Forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and shewing of hard sentences, and dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar: now let Daniel be called, and he will shew the interpretation. Dan. 5:14 – I have even heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in thee. Dan. 6:3 – Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.]

18:4 – The words of a man's mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook. [compare Eph. 5:25-27 – Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.]

18:11 – The rich man's wealth is his strong city, and as an high wall in his own conceit. [cf. Luke 12:16-21 – And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.]

18:24 – A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother. [cf. Matt. 7:12 – Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. Gal. 6:7 – Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.]

19:2 – Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth. [cf. 1:16 – For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood. Is. 59:7 – Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths.]

19:4 – Wealth maketh many friends; but the poor is separated from his neighbour. [cf. Luke 16:9 – And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations.]

19:11 – The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression. [cf. 15:18 – A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife. James 1:19-20 – Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.]

19:18 – Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying. [cf. 13:24 – He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.]

19:21 – There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand. [cf. Is. 46:9-10 – Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure]

19:25 – Smite a scorner, and the simple will beware: and reprove one that hath understanding, and he will understand knowledge. [cf. Ecc. 8:11 – Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.]

19:26 – He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach. [CONTRAST Ex. 20:12 – Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. Deu. 5:16 – Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.]

16:5 – Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished. [cf. Prov. 6:16-17 – These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood]

16:5 – Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished. [cf. Ps. 2:1-5 – Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.]

16:16 – How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver! [cf. Ps.

16:28 – A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends. [cf. Prov. 6:16,19 – These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: ... A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.]

17:4 – A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue. [cf. v. 15 – He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD. Is. 5:20,23-25 – Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! ... Which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him! Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the law of the LORD of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel. Therefore is the anger of the LORD kindled against his people, and he hath stretched forth his hand against them, and hath smitten them: and the hills did tremble, and their carcases were torn in the midst of the streets. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.]

17:9 – He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends. [compare James 5:20 – Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.]

17:9 – He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends. [cf. 16:28 – A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends. Prov. 6:16,19 – These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: ... A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.]

17:16 – Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it? [cf. Prov. 28:9 – He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination. Ezek. 14:1-8 – Then came certain of the elders of Israel unto me, and sat before me. And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face: should I be inquired of at all by them? Therefore speak unto them, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Every man of the house of Israel that setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to the prophet; I the LORD will answer him that cometh according to the multitude of his idols; That I may take the house of Israel in their own heart, because they are all estranged from me through their idols. Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Repent, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations. For every one of the house of Israel, or of the stranger that sojourneth in Israel, which separateth himself from me, and setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to a prophet to inquire of him concerning me; I the LORD will answer him by myself: And I will set my face against that man, and will make him a sign and a proverb, and I will cut him off from the midst of my people; and ye shall know that I am the LORD.]

18:1 – Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom. [cf. Ps. 1:1-3 – Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.]

18:7 – A fool's mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul. [cf. Matt. 12:37 – For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.]

19:2 – Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth. [cf. Hos. 4:6 – My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.]

19:5 – A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape. [cf. v. 9 – A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish. Rev. 21:8 – But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.]

19:17 – He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again. [compare Matt. 10:42 – And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.]

16:1 – The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the LORD. ["prepar* ... heart*" (I Chr. 29:18-19 – O LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, our fathers, keep this for ever in the imagination of the thoughts of the heart of thy people, and prepare their heart unto thee: And give unto Solomon my son a perfect heart, to keep thy commandments, thy testimonies, and thy statutes, and to do all these things, and to build the palace, for the which I have made provision. Ps. 10:17-18 – LORD, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear: To judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may no more oppress. Luke 1:17 – And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. I Sam. 7:3; II Chr. 12:14; 19:3; 20:33; 30:18-19; Ezra 7:9-10; Job 11:13-15; Prov. 16:1]

16:1 – The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the LORD. [cf. Luke 12:11-12 – And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say: For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.]

16:2 – All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits. [cf. v. 25 – There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.]

16:14 – The wrath of a king is as messengers of death: but a wise man will pacify it. [cf. Dan. 2]

16:26 – He that laboureth laboureth for himself; for his mouth craveth it of him. [cf. II Thes. 3:10 – For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.]

17:13 – Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house. [cf. II Sam. 11:11; 12:7,9-10 – And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing. ... And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul ... Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon. Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.]

17:15 – He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD. [cf.

18:2 – A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself. [cf. Ps. 10:3 – For the wicked boasteth of his heart's desire, and blesseth the covetous, whom the LORD abhorreth. Discover = uncover.]

18:10 – The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe. [cf. Is. 50:10 – Who is among you that feareth the LORD, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the LORD, and stay upon his God. Zeph. 3:12 – I will also leave in the midst of thee an afflicted and poor people, and they shall trust in the name of the LORD. Matt. 12:18,21 – Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles. ... And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.]

18:14 – The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear? [cf. 17:22 – A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.]

19:4 – Wealth maketh many friends; but the poor is separated from his neighbour. [cf. v. 6 – Many will intreat the favour of the prince: and every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts. Luke 16:9 – And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations.]
